WHAT IS ALOO MATAR KEEMA?
Quick 30-Minute Aloo Matar Keema is a potato, peas, and ground beef curry. It's the ultimate definition of comfort food. My mother used to cook it for me through out school and college at least once a week. This recipe takes me back home to Kansas. This Pakistani dinner recipe originated in Pakistan.
Aloo Matar Keema is a classic recipe. There are some Pakistani recipes like Dum Ka Keema and Anda Keema that you won't find in any restaurant but they sure are a hidden staple in Pakistani cooking.
INGREDIENTS
- Potatoes- I used golden medium-sized potatoes but red potatoes can be use as well.
- Ground beef- I used ground beef but ground chicken or ground lamb can be use as well.
- Olive oil- I used olive oil but you can any neutral oil.
- Ginger Garlic paste- I used homemade ginger garlic paste but store-bought ginger garlic paste can easily be substituted.
- Whole and powdered spices- These ingredients will bring warmth and flavor to this recipe.
- Yogurt- I used homemade full fat yogurt but low fat store-bought yogurt can easily be substituted.
HOW TO MAKE ALOO MATAR KEEMA?
Add oil and whole spices.
Now add green pepper and onion.
Add ginger garlic paste.
Now add tomatoes.
Add salt and powdered spices.
Next add ground beef.
Add yogurt.
Now add potatoes and water let everything cook.
It should look like this after it gets done cooking.
Add peas.
Mix well!

Quick 30-Minute Aloo Matar Keema
Ingredients
- 2 medium-size potatoes cut in cube
- 1 cup peas frozen
- 1 lbs ground beef
- 2 medium tomatoes roughly chopped
- ⅓ cup olive oil or any neutral oil
- 1 medium onion finely sliced
- 1 serrano pepper (green pepper) roughly chopped
- 3 tbsp ginger garlic paste
- ½ cup yogurt
- ½ cup water
Whole spices
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 4 cloves
- 1 black cardamom
- 4 green cardamoms
- 5 black peppercorns
- 1 dried long red pepper
Powdered spices and salt
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1½ tsp kosher salt
- ¼ tsp Garam Masala Powder
Garnish
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cilantro finely chopped
Instructions
- In a medium size pot or skillet, add olive oil, on medium heat, let it heat up.
- Now add whole spices, let it sizzle for 10 seconds.
- Add onion and green pepper and let it sauté until brown.
- Now add ginger garlic paste and mix.
- Add tomatoes and mix.
- Now add salt and powdered spices and mix.
- Next add ground beef, break the ground beef if need and cook the ground beef for few minutes until no longer pink.
- Add yogurt and mix.
- Now add potatoes and mix.
- Cover and let it cook for 10 minutes on medium flame or until the ground beef and potatoes are fully cooked.
- Add peas and mix well for 2 minutes.
- Garnish with lemon juice and cilantro.
- Serve it hot with a hot chapati and some kachumber.
