WHAT IS LAUKI CHANA DAL?
Bottle gourd and split chickpea lentil curry, known as 30-Minute Pakistani Lauki Chana Dal, has its roots in India and has become a popular recipe in Pakistan. Bursting with flavor, this vegetarian recipe boasts mild spicing and is conveniently prepared in an Instant Pot.
This Pakistani/Indian dinner recipe is one of my family recipes. Other vegetarian recipes on the blog are: Achari Aloo, Aloo Matar, and Zuchanni Curry. This is one of my all time favorite comfort foods.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DAL GOSHT AND LAUKI CHANA DAL?
Dal Gosht is split chickpea lentil and mutton curry and Lauki Chana Dal is Bottle gourd with split chickpea lentil curry. They are completely different Pakistani/Indian recipes.
INGREDIENTS
- Bottle gourd- In Urdu, this vegetable is known as Lauki. The recommended method is to remove the skin and then proceed to cut it, following the demonstration in the video.
- Split Chickpeas- This is referred to as Chana Dal. It's advisable to soak them overnight to expedite the cooking process in the Instant Pot.
- Tomato- Using just one tomato should suffice to even out the taste.
- Whole Spices- Adding this will infuse warmth into the recipe, and all you require are common essential spices.
HOW TO MAKE LAUKI CHANA DAL?
Soak the Chana Dal or Split Chickpeas overnight.
Brown the onion and add green peppers.
Now add ginger garlic paste and tomato.
Add salt and powdered spices.
Next add chana dal and pressure it.
Add Lauki or bottle gourd, mix, and pressure
It should look like this.
Garnish with cilantro and mint.

HOW TO STORE IT?
You can store Lauki Chana Dal in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. However, please note that this recipe is not suitable for freezing.

30-Minute Pakistani Lauki Chana Dal
Equipment
- Instant Pot
Ingredients
- 1 bottle gourd (Lauki)
- 1½ cup split chickepea chana dal
- ⅓ cup olive oil or any neutral oil
- 1 medium onion thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp ginger garlic paste
- 1 cup water
- 1 green pepper
- 1 tomato
Whole spices
- 2 black cardamoms
- 4 green cardamoms
- 5 black peppercorns
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 4 cloves
Salt and powdered spices
- 1½ tsp kosher salt or as needed
- 1½ tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 2 tbsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- ¼ tsp Garam Masala powder
Instructions
- Soak the lentil over night.
- In an Instant Pot, on sauté mode, add oil, let it heat up.
- Add green pepper and whole spices.
- Next add onion and brown the onion.
- Add tomato and ginger garlic paste.
- Mix well.
- Add lentil and water.
- Mix well.
- Let it come to a boil.
- Cover the lid, and select pressure for 3 minutes.
- Vent the steam out.
- Add bottle gourd (lauki) and mix well.
- Close the lid and pressure for 2 minutes.
- Vent the steam out.
- Garnish with mint and cilantro.
- Enjoy!
