5-Minute Homemade Chaat Masala is a glorious mix of whole and powdered spices where the result is tangy. Its kick is a blend of being tart, salty, and mildly spicy. It's very popular to sprinkle over Pakistani Appetizer recipes to give a distinct kick, like in Fruit Chaat, Dahi Papdi Chaat, and even in some Pakistani drink recipes like Homemade Limca.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHAAT MASALA AND GARAM MASALA
Chaat Masala and Garam Masala Powder are both Pakistani spices yet quite disparate. Comparing the two is like comparing Biryani and Pulao. Chaat masala is tangy and Garam Masala is a subtle spice blend.
SUBTITUTE FOR CHAAT MASALA
If Chaat masala isn't available, try black salt or amchur powder (dried mango powder). Fresh lemon juice would work as well.
INGREDIENTS
A lot of people try to find shortcuts to the ingredients list of chaat masala; however, here is a list of ingredients without any shortcuts:
- Cumin Seed and Coriander Seeds - two of the important ingredients to start almost every Pakistani spice blend.
- Black peppercorns- To give this spice blend a kick, but black pepper can be easily substituted.
- Carom Seeds- Also known as Ajwain. Add according to the recipe if added more than instructed the spice blend will be bitter.
- Black Salt- Known for its sharp salty flavor. Can't have Chaat Masala without the black salt.
- Dried Ginger powder- Also known as Sonth, also used in Homemade Nihari Masala.

Equipment
- spice grinder
Ingredients
Whole Spices
- 6 tbsp cumin seeds
- 4 tbsp coriander seeds
- 2 tsp black peppercorns
- 22 cloves
- 1 tsp carom seeds ajwain
- 4 tsp fennel seeds sauf
Instructions
- In a fry pan, on medium heat. add the whole spices.
- Let them dry roast for 1 minute.
- Now add the whole spices in a spice grinder and grind them until they are powder form.
- Take the powder form whole spices in a bowl or a jar.
- Now mix in the salt and powdered spices.
- Mix well and enjoy!
